This was an incredibly special event and I feel fortunate to have played even a marginal role in making it come to life. hastagephlove hashtagfrozenforlife

#LikeAGirl

I watched this video for the first time last night. When they start asking young girls what it means to do something “like a girl,” I openly burst into tears. After watching, I asked Sunny to show me what it meant to her if I told her to “run like a girl.” She stood quizzically for a moment, and then sprinted down the hallway as fast as she could.

I proceeded to cry even harder.

May my girls always see their femaleness with such strength and pride.

Gladdy and The Whale Fountain

Happiness is a flat-coated retriever and a child’s whale pool.

I am still recovering from the marathon of these past 10 days. Between shooting my first wedding and executing yet another magical Williams Reunion, I am fried. I have Madam Mim hair and Demi Moore voice to show for it. A lazy Sunday afternoon in our backyard complete with vanilla milkshakes and whale pools was the beginning of my recovery. And Gladdy’s antics with the whale pool fountain were the highlight. More later, including further proof of the purple hair

We Look Amazing in These Gowns

In the spirit of graduation season…

NPR animated friend and fellow Eph Jon Lovett’s graduation speech. And, yes, we DO look amazing in these gowns.

Oh how I miss the high of dancing and performing regularly. There’s just nothing else in the world quite like that kind of joy.

I love love love this video, especially because the “S” showcases step and includes the founder of my college step team. I could watch talented dancers all day long with my jaw on the floor.

South Carolina // 2014

We arrived home yesterday afternoon to 16 peeping chicks (which had arrived early and were fortunately rescued from the post office on a Sunday afternoon and set up chez Cart by our dear friend Justine) and a laundry room turned jungle thanks to abundant vegetable seedling growth. After unpacking and laundry and groceries, we set to work transplanting seedlings and mulching flower beds and turning compost into the soil and, most importantly, snuggling the brand new baby chicks. It may sound cliché, but I loved getting settled in back home by physically reconnecting with the place and the life that makes it tick.

More on that and our past 10 days of adventure later. I do have this short video of our trip to South Carolina. It’s our first attempt at live video during vacation, but was a fun and different way to capture our time with James’ family. It’s good to be home, but it was nice to get away!

A follow-up to this Honeymaid commercial. Very much in alignment with today’s The Sunny Side, no?

I watched this commercial for the first time while at the gym today.

It’s apparently a hopey changey kind of day! And now my pantry is stocked with Graham Crackers and Teddy Grahams.

We’re Doing It Right

This weekend, Sunny and I watched this sweet video of Sunny’s first babysitter, our nanny in L.A., getting married. Chantelle will always hold a dear place in my heart as the woman who helped me learn how to become a mother by loving my daughter when I needed it most. It was magnificent to get a glimpse of this beautiful milestone.

Sunny happily watched the video and admired Chantelle’s dress.

Her: Mama, will I wear a dress like that if I get married?
Me: If you want to, yes. If you get married, you get to decide what you want to wear.
Her: Will I decide what my wedding will be like, or will the boy or girl I marry decide?
Me: *Silently fist pumping* Well, you’ll get to decide WITH whoever you marry how you want your wedding to be.

And that was the end of the conversation. She has no sense of her own sexuality. She’s four years old. All that conversation indicated is that she’s been exposed to enough (diverse) adult relationships to understand that you can marry whomever your heart desires. And that marriage is not a foregone conclusion.

Disney a la Cart

For the past week, James and I have been working on a video to thank James’ parents for a wonderful trip to Florida, complete with inaugural Disney adventure. After completing the tribute to our vacation, we edited the video down into a shorter version to share in this space. It’s a quick look at the laughter and magic that transpired in The Happiest Place on Earth. (I would say that that slogan is true, with the caveat that at times, it is also The Most Miserable Place on Earth (think tantrumming, misbehaving children, price points that are highway robbery, and lines that will leave you grey haired and wrinkled)). Such is the price of Disney, and, I admit, it was well worth it.

I’ll do a longer post next week recapping how we tackled a trip to Disney World with a preschooler and toddler, and offer up some suggestions and recommendations that were incredibly helpful. In the meantime, Happy Weekend to all!
