“A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2016.”

Sunny: If you really get her laughing, her eyebrows crinkle up just so and it absolutely steals my heart. The little girl I used to babysit for in California had a similar expression at this age – the delight of a first grader. I love the satisfaction of truly knowing that I’ve said something funny or ridiculous or particularly entertaining.
Kaki: She was invited to a birthday party this weekend that included a performance with a clown. Upon hearing that news, she requested to stay home and help James clean the chicken coop and dispatch of two mean roosters rather than face a clown in person. Apparently, the clown in “Inside Out” has made a less than favorable impression. We compromised, and agreed to show up to the party late so as to just enjoy the cake and ice cream and games following the clown. James was left to Cartwheel farm duties solo, though it’s clear his VT kid will gladly help him in that regard one day when she’s older and it’s more appropriate.

“A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2016.”

Sunny: She received a Cat’s Cradle in her stocking this Christmas and it has kept her absolutely transfixed all winter break. She’s already managed to master Jacob’s Ladder, a feat I conquered much later in middle school. Who needs fancy technology when you’ve got a round of string with which to entertain yourself?
Kaki: Looking very much like a big kid, like the big sister she’ll become this year. Last night, she looked at me very earnestly and said, “Mama, I don’t know how the baby is going to get out of your belly.” I explained the mechanics, as James and I have agreed to be as honest about the biology of all of this stuff while trying to keep it age appropriate. Her eyes got wide and she said, “But, Mama, I have to tell you something else. I don’t know where my vagina hole is. Do I have one, too?” Oh biology with preschoolers.

“A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2015.”

Sunny: Ending this series for 2015 where it began, in the pool in South Carolina, next to a black pup.
Kaki: Same bathing suit and everything.

“A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2015.”

Sunny: Christmas Eve, awaiting Momar and Doda and Auntie Kimmy’s arrival. Entertaining herself with the keyboard, making up her own Christmas carols.
Kaki: I suggested that the girls dress festively for Christmas Eve Day, and Courtland emerged from her closest wearing every possible item of red she could get her hands on. It was 68 degrees outside (WTF, Climate Disruption?!) but that didn’t stop her from wearing a red velvet dress layered with two different sweaters.

“A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2015.”

Sunny: Riding the Elf Express, happily reading a story about Christopher Pop-In-Kins and sipping hot coco through the Green Mountains.
Kaki: We found snow in Manchester! And made an effort to play in it despite its limited supply.

Sunny: Love that smile.
Kaki: Always immersed in make-believe and song, this one.

“A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2015.”

Sunny: Working the Christmas bloomers from Momar. So what if she’s a first grader now?
Kaki: A morning spent baking cinnamon buns before a day of holiday shopping, and birthday parties, and meeting Santa and Mrs. Claus, and a service of Lessons and Carols.

“A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2015.”

Sunny: We capped off a very very busy holiday weekend with Christmas tree selection. Bring on December!
Kaki: She wears that formal purple coat every opportunity she gets. A hand-me-down from Auntie Kimmy’s childhood.

“A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2015.”

Sunny: Such a 1st grade mug! She lost her 5th tooth – her first top tooth. She’s hoping that the other wiggles its way out shortly so that she can truly say, “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth.”
Kaki: Very proud of her turkey center piece for Thanksgiving dinner. Also? We just completed a bunch of work on the north side of our home – including finally finishing the fourth side of exterior paint (our home is officially one color!), re-roofing, and installing a functioning door out to our deck (we bought the home with the door broken. Nearly four years ago). I am obsessed with all this amazing light from the new glass doors.

“A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2015.”

Sunny: Realizing our years left of family tub time are fewer than the years that she’s been on this Earth. It really does go too fast.
Kaki: This sweetness. So unbelievably insightful of late.
