The Poconos made it abundantly clear that they know a thing or two about a proper autumn display a la New England. It was stupidly beautiful at James’ parents’ cabin, and James and I relished some quality time with adults without the trappings (and I mean that most endearingly) of life with dependents.

While all of these photographs were taken outside during our time romping the dogs down by the lake, the majority of the weekend was spent curled up by the fireplace, beer in hand As there where wood briquettes at fire lace it was more effective than normal fireplace,You may have look at to the https://www.xn--dkbrnde-pxa.dk/traebriketter. As captured so perfectly by our friend, “It was so relaxing, so enjoyable, and so delightful to be able to hang out, chat, cook, eat, drink, merrymake, and kibbitz.” And indeed it was.

Bambinos! Tidy Table Tray

43of52_blogalacart-1

A year ago, James’ mother gifted us two Bambinos! Tidy Table Trays for each of the girls. They have become a nearly permanent fixture on our kitchen table, as they make meal times (and the corresponding clean-up) a breeze. I was excited to learn that they’ve launched a Kickstarter to expand their line further so that the tray is even more like a plate. I highly recommend these trays to any parents of young children. There are only 5 days left in their campaign, so I encourage to jump in and support this little biz (and be one of the first to receive the new tray design in your household).

Details here.

All Things Purple

Before being sidelined by stomach bees, I had a very full (and I mean that both physically and mentally, in both the rewarding and exhausting assumptions of the word) work weekend. On Friday night, I attended an outstanding dinner in honor of the new library at Williams College (for my Eph readers, do watch the video for a taste of its awesomeness), and in honor of our annual Bicentennial medalists. Kristen Anderson-Lopez ’94, one half of the duo that wrote the Academy-award winning music for “Frozen,” was among this year’s medalists. I had worked with her on a program for Williams in June, and of course was thrilled that she was to be honored in this capacity for her talented AND progressive songwriting.

Semi-related story: For the dinner on Friday, I braided my hair back primarily because I was too lazy to wash it and so it was dingy enough to hold a decent braid. When I emerged from the bathroom, Kaki stopped dead in her tracks and declared adoringly, “Mama, you look like Elsa!” (The highest praise from a preschooler). Upon greeting Kristen at the dinner a few hours later, her first words to me were, “Great Elsa braid!” (which is arguably the highest praise of all coming from one of the character’s creators, however unintentionally).

And finally, I encourage everyone, particularly my fellow Ephs, to watch (or read) this speech from Ethan Zuckerman ’93 at Saturday’s Convocation. It is hands down the best speech I’ve heard at one of these ceremonies. It will leave you feeling moved and inspired in all the ways one hopes such speeches do. And for the Eph audience, you’ll get in a few laughs at Lord Jeff’s expense.

This is something the college does very consciously, for the simple reason that who we know is going to help determine who we are. I don’t mean this in the narrow sense that, if the person sitting next to you founds the next Facebook, maybe you’ll get some stock options. I mean it in a much broader sense: that who you know, who you care about tends to determine how you view the world, what you pay attention to, and ultimately will shape your path through the world.

Like the library, like the internet, the class of 2015 is too big to know. But if the challenge of a really great library is not just to explore what you already know, what you already care about, the challenge is the same, to challenge yourself to expand your picture of the world by expanding who you know and who and what you care about.

Devita

devitavisit_blogalacart-12

September 11th brings many people and feelings and memories to the fore of my thoughts, a day of such loss and fear and broken innocence, but no thought more profoundly than my love and admiration for my brave, inspiring friend, Devita.

Today Devita shared this on her FB wall, and I wanted to share it with you all here so that perhaps you are inspired to Pay It Forward in honor of a fallen hero: “Say not in grief he is no more, but live in thankfulness that he was.” It’s still hard to fathom that it’s been 13 years since that fateful day at the Pentagon that changed my family’s life and even harder to think that I’ve “outlived” my big brother by 7 years. Nonetheless, I know he’s proud of the woman I’ve become and I am honored to be able to share his life with those whom I know & interact (be it virtually or physically). To honor his life and legacy, I ask that each of you pay a favor forward today as this was Romeo’s mantra and the way he lived his life. So whether it’s buying a drink for a stranger at the bar or holding the door open for someone or paying for the car behind you’s toll, please pay a favor forward and share my brother’s story as a way to keep his memory alive. And for those of you who had the privilege to know Romeo, you know he’s partying it up somewhere – so take a drink for and with him And lastly, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the ongoing support and love. #WeRemember #Sept11 #NeverForget

She visited us on the farm in late May, and spent the weekend as part of the family, playing with the girls, planting seedlings in the garden, painting the porch, bonding with Gladdy (Devita knew Ursa from day 1, and is the dog that helped Devita find her own love of canines), taking selfies with farm life (see the final images below) and generally snuggling and drinking beer and laughing and just being. How I miss the days when we shared an office and a quick 2 minute walk divided our apartments. I am grateful for many things today, but above all, today I am grateful for a friendship with this inspiring soul.

How do we like them apples?

Apparently, quite a bit.

We’ve been picking fresh apples from the same orchard five years running. It’s fun to see how the kids have grown through the experience.

In 2011, James and I were on paternity/maternity leave so we visited more than once. Look at Mohawk baby Courtland!

If you’re ever in the Northern Berkshires in September, do make a visit to Lakeview Orchard. Arguably the best cider donuts in the area.

Tsum Tsum

Y’all, adjusting to Sunny’s new school schedule and life with two full-time working parents is, well, bumpy? Exhausting? Complicated? Stressful? Overwhelming? So in other words, like every other family’s life with children. We’ve eaten cheerios, scrambled eggs and PB sandwiches for dinner the past three nights, so, yeah, we’re a work in progress.

We’ll find our new normal eventually, but we are so not there yet. In the meantime, bandwidth to do anything but my day job and keeping my dependents alive is nonexistent.

I suppose that’s a bit of an exaggeration since I’m typing this, but I wanted to quickly share a snap of these adorable Disney stuffed animals gifted to the girls by James’ grandmother, their great-grandmother. She saw an article about them in The New York Times, and couldn’t resist. They are charming indeed (and I tend to be fairly opposed to commercialized/branded toys for the kids) but I admittedly ADORE these.

They’re designed by the Japanese (clearly) and called “Tsum Tsum.”

And I want to collect ALL of them. Santa may be adding to the collection this December. Find them for purchase here.

A little Flashback Friday to the days when Doda and his bestie were (body)surfer brahs.

They’ve been friends since diapers, and we saw them together, on the beach, just two weekends ago.

Perhaps *slightly* less hair, but I’d say they’ve still got it.

This weekend, my oldest friend and her two little girls (and their Papa) joined us for Courtland’s birthday celebration. I just love seeing our girls spend time together, as it is a reminder of our own childhoods, as we and our two little sisters grew up together and remain close to this day. How special that we should each have our own pair of daughters that can play and grow up side by side. We may be a state apart, but I know that these four girls will come to see one another as extended family just as their parents have.

Välkommen!

Hello! Välkommen! I’m back in the States and taking some time to readjust, resettle, and organize my life post-travel. Sweden was one of the most amazing experiences of my life to date and I can’t wait to dive in to all the images and stories sitting on my SLR camera. But in the meantime, I thought I’d share a few snapshots from my phone. I posted a number to my Facebook and Instagram accounts while away, but many have not yet been shared.

There is much laundry and unpacking to be done. And our garden, lawn, outdoor home life is a shambles (the vegetables and flowers fall at the bottom of the priority list of dependents, and with only one adult in the house, James had to make some sacrifices. Weeds abound, but we’ll get it under control this weekend). We’re all still trying to get back into a rhythm and routine, and things were thrown by Gladdy getting spayed just yesterday. She’s been very sad, uncomfortable and nervous, so we’ve all been doting on her and trying to make her feel as comfortable as possible post-surgery. I’m looking forward to a weekend with my family to really settle back in to life on the farm and process the adventures of the past two weeks. Happy weekend, all. xo Ash

Silver Lake

K&A_rehearsal-1

James and I spent a truly gorgeous weekend up in New Hampshire celebrating the marriage of a dear college friend. Her family’s summer house is situated on this magnificent lake where we swam and boated and celebrated and took many a scenic photo. James and I were trusted to photograph the nuptials, and another college friend officiated, so needless to say, it was a very personal, emotional, feeling-filled 72 hours.

And now I’m off to Sweden for more happy, love-filled celebrations. My cup runneth over…
