“A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2013.”

Sunny: This week has turned her into a fish. She’s learning to swim, and holds her breath under water for seconds on end. Huge strides this vacation in terms of her aquatic development. Mama approves!
Kaki: Hesitant to be in water where her toes can’t touch the bottom. Loves sitting by the shore, diaper full of sand, digging holes and splashing.

Dog Heaven

To bring comfort to me and James and the girls as we prepare for the inevitable with our Ursa Bear, many people have recommended a book called Dog Heaven. While we appreciate the sentiment, both James and I found that the book did not do justice to our family’s concept of the “after life” and how we wanted to explain death, heaven, spirituality, God, religion, all those big ominous unknowns, to our children. Heaven is a lovely idea, and that’s not to say that I don’t want my daughters’ thinking about heaven, it’s just that, well, we don’t know if it exists, so I want it presented as an option. As a possibility. As an unknown.

The only book dealing with the death of a family pet that’s resonated with us is “The Tenth Good Thing About Barney.” It introduces the concept of heaven, and explains that we don’t know very much about it. It goes on to say that what we DO know is that when something dies and it is buried in the earth, it changes and helps bring forth new life. And that that in and of itself is a miraculous and amazing thing. We’ve talked to Addison about how Ursa will live on in her heart forever, and that she can picture Ursa in heaven by imagining her in all of her favorite places on Earth. That heaven lives in each of us for those that we love.

I am so grateful that Ursa is here with us by the lake (given her diagnosis, we had not expected for her to be present for this trip and we realize that it may be her final visit). We’ve been enjoying all these “extra” moments – swimming in the lake, chasing tennis balls, running through open fields, and roaming through expansive forest – because, what I do know is that I will see my Ursa in this place, in this state of perpetual happiness, for the rest of my life. We got all that we could think of for her from Tree House Puppies – from treats to toys. That we are already seeing her in dog heaven. Because if there is a dog heaven, this is it.

What a gift.

First Day of Summer Camp

Y86A6627

Today, Sunny headed off to her first day of summer camp. Happy 4th of July, indeed!

This is the same camp that her father, her grandfather, and her great-grandfather grew up attending from age 4 onward. Pretty incredible that kind of family legacy.

She’s sporting some sweet (patriotic) shorts of mine from the early 80s because we are nothing if not festive in this family. Thanks, Momar!

Later today they’ll be the usual… fireworks, hot dogs, and beer. ‘MERICA!

Happy Independence Day, y’all.Y86A6639

Wigs for Kids

wigsforkids_blogalacart-5

I have always been envious of Sunny’s Rapunzel-like hair. She takes after my mother, sister, and *ahem* brother, who all have long, gorgeous, flowing locks. My hair isn’t terrible, it’s just not abundant and radiant and a statement piece like my siblings, mother, and daughter.

Sunny’s mane has been a conversation starter since she was born with a full-blown mohawk. But recently, its extreme length has been less-than-ideal in the heat and humidity of this particularly moist summer. The other night, as Addison was desperately swiping her matted hair from her neck, a tangle of frustration and defeat, she proclaimed that she needed a haircut. I admitted that sounded like a smart idea, especially given our lack of air conditioning. I’d been resisting having it cut, not only because it was so stunning, but because I knew that it would turn my recent four year old into a full blown, last year of preschool, four year old. But I totally sympathized with the horror and discomfort of sweaty, disheveled, humidity-induced frizz.

Given its length, I proposed that she donate her excessive ponytail to Wigs for Kids. Cancer (unfortunately) has been a constant topic of conversation ever since Ursa was diagnosed over a year ago. Then the girls’  babysitter’s husband died very suddenly after an unexpected, late leukemia diagnosis this fall, and a dear friend’s nephew (who is the same age as Courtland) spent last year battling cancer (he, fortunately, kicked its butt!). On the upside, Sunny’s FGM (Fairy Godmother) is a radiation oncologist, so James and I have been able to explain to her that her Auntie Dellie helps care for people living with cancer. We told her that, like her Auntie Dellie, this was something meaningful she could do to help a little boy or girl fighting cancer. We talked about how chemotherapy in humans causes hair loss (and she knows Ursa’s been doing chemotherapy but still has a full coat of fur), and that to help make them feel better, her hair could be used to create a wig. We looked at pictures online and talked about how special it was that she could do something to help.

She was excited by the idea, so a hair appointment was made. She moved everyone in the hair salon with her enthusiastic proclamations that she was going to donate her hair to help a little girl or boy with cancer. Although nervous about getting her hair washed and blow dried, she quickly overcame her fears in the name of ponytail donation.

She was fascinated by the severed ponytail, and showed it off to everyone in the salon.

She did not love the noisy blow dryers, but her mood elevated when she refocused on the mirror before her and watched her haircut in process.

She came home triumphant with a balloon validating her courage, and a crazy adorable new look, perfect for summer.

She now looks twelve years old and I may have wept like a baby in that hair salon taking in this rapid onslaught of time. And it’s not just the physical haircut, but the lesson that came from this experience that makes my maternal heart ache with nostalgia, and pride, and tenderness.

She is positively beautiful, inside and out. Here you rothwelldouglas check the all types of wing for litttle girls. And I couldn’t be more proud of the person she’s growing in to, one filled with a generous and kind heart. One that would make any mother proud.

I just fall more and more in love with this kid everyday.

One of Many

On Saturday, I attended a baby shower in honor of James’ cousin who is expecting a baby boy this fall. I love any excuse to knit, so took the opportunity to whip up this baby cardigan and these sweet booties for their present.

I mean, those buttons! I could not resist!

This baby bootie pattern is really fun – completely seamless and really quick once you get the hang of the pattern. I recommend it highly. I have Kaki’s FGM to thank for the recommendation.

Just one skein of yarn created this full ensemble, and I had enough left over to do a baby hat as well but did not have the time before the shower. I can always send that piece along before he’s born. But I recommend this yarn, as it is self-striping, super soft, and I got a sweater, shoes, and hat out of the deal. Boom!

I have many a friend expecting babies this year, so I imagine I’ll be doing a variation of this theme quite a bit.

July 2013

may2013

Snap, crackle, pop! Welcome, July! I hope that everyone is kicking off the month with a bang. We’re lakeside at James’ parents’ cabin in the Poconos. Not a bad way to truly start the summer festivities.  As always, many thanks to Chloe for the monthly design. Click on the calendar to grab the full res version for your desktop.
