Nearly a month ago, when our back lawn was blanketed in apples not snowfall, we headed over to a friend’s house on a Sunday afternoon to turn all those pesky lawn apples into fresh-pressed cider. While Penelope seriously enjoys access to apples aplenty, if we let her eat everything our backyard has to offer this time of year, well, let’s just say that we would have a gastrointestinal swine disaster on our hands. So we did her a favor and gathered bushels and bushels of fallen apples for juicing.

We are fortunate to have friends that include us in these special, seasonal pastimes. This is the same family that lets us partake in their spring maple sugaring. There’s something so simple and nostalgic about taking an afternoon to hand press cider from a vintage press. I am so grateful to be raising my girls in a place and community that allows so easily for these kinds of experiences.

We now have frozen cider stocked in our freezer, ready to break out for holiday entertaining. And it’s extra special that we can say that it came from our very own trees.
