Thought.

She is most still while watching videos of herself on the iPhone.

Are we breeding a narcissist? Potentially, yes.

Obsession.

Hanna Banana.

Annoyance.

Her love of screaming. For no other reason than to make noise and hear her voice echo through the halls of our home, or in this photo, the home of friends who may think twice before inviting us over again.

Thought.

We’re raising a party animal. Our bad.

Sunshine.

She wore her yellow dress to the wedding this past Sunday.

Fits a tad differently than it did just one year ago.

And now I’m cursing the passage of time. And weeping quietly at my desk. Hey Time, slow down, will ya?

Floor Bed Brain Dump

The above image is our inspiration for Sunny’s bed. As we welcome the Sesame Seed into our lives, we’re transitioning our first born out of her crib and into her own “big girl” bed. I love the idea of a floor bed, for so very many reasons:

1. In high school, I went through an obsession with East Asian decor and demanded that my bed be placed on the floor. So clearly, this strikes a cord with a design technique I’ve utilized before.

2. No ugly toddler bed rails, as she’ll be low enough to the ground to be safe even if she rolls out of bed.

3. James and I can make the bed ourselves! And by James and I, I primarily mean James. But I’ll provide the design direction, which is totally as much work. We’ll be able to create something super cute and unique on a budget, which is the goal of this entire project.

We began the bed-making process this weekend. En route home from DC, we stopped at Ikea to pick up a mattress. We wanted to test them out in person and see the various sizing options firsthand. We don’t have space in the room for a twin mattress, but thought that our long string bean of a child might outgrow the the toddler mattress too quickly. Fortunately, Ikea has Extendable Mattresses specifically for this reason. Essentially, it’s three pieces of mattress. We’ll use the center piece and one of the end pieces in the bed frame, and the third piece will be used in the headboard. Then, when we invest in bunk beds (which we foresee for when the kids are both old enough), we can use all three pieces in the twin-sized trundle bed to be used during slumber parties with friends. Yay versatility!

While playing in the Kid’s section of Ikea, I stumbled across this bed canopy and for only $20, knew that it’d be perfect to hang over the floor bed. It has all the necessary splashes of color, and the dots are suggestive of the whole rain/balloon motif that we’re going for. See?

I’m planning to create a mobile out of felt or yarn to hang down the center of the canopy. Some combination of the following:

We intend to cover the headboard in fabric, and also cover the wood of the bed frame in cotton batting and fabric to give it some padding. Thanks to reader Nik’s comments on last week’s post, I’m planning on using these fabrics. The children carrying the balloons will go on the headboard, while the hot air balloons (which will be less saturated when printed on fabric) will line the wood bed frame.

I promise to document James’ process for building the floor bed in the coming weeks. While I’m not handy that way, some of you may be inspired to give what he does a try.

So, what do you think? Can you tell I love mismatched patterns and bombardments of color or what?!

Sunshine.

Someone’s a tad wiped out from a righteous night of dancing and celebrating her fairy godparents’ nuptials. The girl’s gotta learn some stamina if she wants to lead the party life.
