Rainbow Butterfly Flower Fairy

sunny-13

James and I each gifted Sunny one “larger,” more special gift and Halloween Costumes. James built her a picnic table and painted it in rainbow striping (I know! The man is good. Even if he was up in his shop in our barn until 2 in the morning the day before her party pulling it together. He did it! And Sunny (and the rest of us) were blown away.)

And I worked with my favorite costume designer, the insanely talented Richelle of Ella Dynae Designs, to create a Rainbow Butterfly Flower Fairy dress. When asked what the theme of her birthday would be, Sunny determined Rainbow Butterfly Flower Fairy (living up to every possible stereotype of a 5-year old girl, and ya know, rainbows, butterflies, flowers and fairies are awesome, and there ain’t nothing wrong with that! Let’s celebrate all things “girlie” that are totally rad!). Richelle created Sunny’s Lilac Fairy costume last year for her fourth birthday (remember this insane photoshoot last spring? These images still make me swoon) and the girls’ Anna and Elsa costumes for our inaugural Disney trip (images here and here). So I knew that she’d do yet another bang up job on this project.

I loved how closely we worked on this costume together, reviewing her sketches, sharing ideas, even texting mid-process to make some final decisions. And it lived up to Sunny’s wildest dreams, and transported us all to a magical world of Rainbow Butterfly Flower Fairies.

It has finally warmed up enough for me to step outside and shoot images of my new wardrobe staples (and just in time as we’re about to be pounded with snow, for which I’m grateful as Maja and Lars are visiting and we’ve got two days of skiing planned, but better for the camera without all that white stuff raining down).

I’ve been living in a version of this outfit all season. Grey is very clearly its mascot. James gifted me the Design House Stockholm hat and I positively don’t know how I survived previous winters without it. I wear it constantly. My mother gifted me the insane Frye riding boots for Christmas, and I still can’t believe they’re mine. They are positively gorgeous, and so versatile. That black and brown leather combo is perfection. And the subtle curve of the cuff? So sexy. SWOON! I also have my mother to thank for the colorful wool scarf. I’ve had it for years and alas, don’t know its origins though I receive compliments on it constantly. The pants are Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, my go to jean brand these days. I’m fortunate to have an outlet within driving distance.

And the sweater! Oh the sweater! Cashmere, and long waisted, and divine! Let’s not pretend like I didn’t wear that very sweater over men’s long underwear to a Superbowl gathering. The length hid the questionable crotch area of the long undies and I was cozy as ever. (I promise I only venture out in public like that when among dear friends. Most of the time, anyway.) I have Everlane to thank for this sweater staple, and they’re now my go-to for all my wardrobe basics (t-shirts, blouses, sweatshirts, bags, sweaters – they’ve got it all). They’re prices are affordable (that’s their thing, “radical transparency” – they work hard to keep their prices affordable without compromising on quality). I’m a huge huge fan of the brand and recommend you head on over and invest in some basics for your own closets –  www.everlane.com

Also, that wooden bangle James gifted me for our 5 year wedding anniversary (the traditional gift is, yes, wood). It’s engraved with the latitude and longitude of our wedding ceremony – appropriately nerdy from my CARTographer husband.

A couple of images that I love that didn’t make it into the post on New Dress a Day. Thanks to James for shooting the looks.

My final post for New Dress a Day is up. Definitely the most special project of the series – and by far my favorite images. Enjoy!

My second to last post of the year over at New Dress a Day (with cameos by Francis Turkey and pie).

School Pride

Last weekend was my final major work event of the season. Fall and early June are my busiest times at work, so I’ve been breathing a huge sigh of relief and enjoying a brief respite from a purple and gold wardrobe.

I’ll have more Homecoming snaps that capture the ridiculous bovine spirit of the weekend from my girl Kate Drew Miller soon. But I wanted to spotlight my spirited nails (and my newest obsession – knuckle rings from Catbird). I had an amazing day in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with Katie from Paperfashion during my whirlwind trip to the city early last week. I’ll be sharing more details about the day coupled with many more photographs, but it included a visit to Catbird where I stocked up on these lovely, delicate, stackable rings and to Primp & Polish for a nail art manicure. I asked my manicurist Joey to incorporate purple and gold and cow print, and she sure delivered. The nails were a big hit, and showed off my delightful Catbird stacks.

Have a happy weekend, friends! I’m off to edit my day with Katie and I’ll have that post up next week that’ll take you into her magical world that is truly the stuff of dreams.

These are a few of my favorite things…

I had a wonderful, whirlwind trip to the city, and snapped this photo while delayed at Penn Station last night. It captures a few of my obsessions of late. More about my trip forthcoming, but first, Homecoming 2013!

1. Original painting by the talented Katie of Paperfashion
2. Insanely gorgeous (yet practical!) bag by my dear Maja of Pinellapi
3. A ring party from Catbird NYC
4. A spirited Williams mani from Primp & Polish
5. One of my growing collection of Ace & Jig dresses. I cannot get enough of this brand. Their clothes are amazing (and stupidly comfortable).

Garden Sweater

gardensweater_blogalacart-1

It would seem that we grow the teeny, tiniest vegetables around. Exhibit A. Exhibit B. And now check out that itty, bitty singular pumpkin our garden was able to produce. *sigh* Better luck next year!

The size of the pumpkin in no way dampened Sunny’s enthusiasm for this wee gourd. She was thrilled when it was finally ready for picking, and it has been on display in our home all month. We’ll be decorating it in googley-eyes this evening, a last minute Halloween DIY (inspired by last year).

Meanwhile, Miss Brie Brie’s family has produced an entire patch of impressively sized pumpkins. We’ll have to learn some tricks of the gourd-growing trade from them next year.

However, I’m not here to showcase the pumpkins, so much as the two finished Garden Sweaters being worn by their respective recepients. I snapped some photos of Courtland wearing Brie’s this spring, but now I’ve (finally) finished Sunny’s – and Brie fits hers! And I’m thrilled to think about another photo shoot in a year or so with Courtland and Lila then rocking the look. The joys of sisterly hand-me-downs!

To create the sweater I adapted this pattern, Tasia’s Cardigan, by Dana Gibbons. I made the 1-2 years size for Brie (currently aged 18 months) and the size 3-4 year size for Sunny (currently 4.5 years). To make both sweaters, I used three skeins of the Dream in Color Classy in SOME SUMMER SKY, and one skein of the Dream in Color Classy in SPRING TICKLE. For the garden beds, I used two skeins of Queensland Collection Kathmandu Aran in RUST. I worked on a US7 circular needle.

I ordered the crazy adorable pewter barnyard animal buttons from Morehouse Farm here.

I adapted the pattern as follows (being sure to follow the original pattern for the button/center area of the cardigan throughout).

I knit in the Dream in Color, “Summer Sky” until 2 inches below the armpit, following the original pattern as is.

I then worked for 2 inches in the Dream in Color, “Spring Tickle.” I knit six rows in a garter stitch, then worked six more rows in a garter stitch, but on the knit rows I did a wave stitch:

  • k5, wrap1, k1, wrap2, k1, wrap3, k1, wrap4, k1, wrap3, k1, wrap2, k5, repeat….
  • Purl rows in between knit wave rows
  • k1, wrap1, k1, wrap2, k1, wrap 3, k1 wrap4, k1, wrap 3, k1, wrap2, k5, repeat Alternate between those two knit wave rows with purls in between for as long as desired.

Finally, I worked in the Queensland Collection Kathmandu Aran, “Rust.”

Knit 2 rows
Purl 4 rows
Knit 4 rows
Repeat 4 purl rows, 4 knit rows for long as desired.

I finished the sweater with 5 rows of ribbed stitching, 2k, 2p, 2k, 2p, repeat.

For the details, I used scrap yarn and did a combination of sewing on top of the finished sweater to create the clouds, trees, chickens, etc. For the vegetables, I crocheted pieces of scrap in various ways, and tied them into the knit rows (or ditches of the garden bed). For the rolling hills area, I did French knots in pink yarn to create the flowers. A good tutorial about how to make French Knots here.

There is no right or wrong way to approach adding details to this sweater. It is a whimsical, arty piece indeed, but lots of fun if you’re comfortable getting creative and experimental with a project.

Gladdy is providing some inspiration for this month’s all black remake. To check out the full post, head on over to New Dress a Day.

Today’s post is short and sweet, because my brain is mush (while Gladden is easier than expected, it’s still an exhausting adjustment for me and James, but we’ll get settled into the new normal… eventually). James snapped these yesterday morning when all the women of the house emerged in matchy matchy style. The girls are dressed in their latest mini boden duds courtesy of Auntie Kimmy, and I’m rocking one of my beloved Marimekko dresses. We are so ready for Homecoming with these looks. But first… a nap!
