“The green dots are fighting bad guys. But you can’t see the bad guys because they’re not in the picture. They’re fighting with rainbows and hearts and flowers and pink, because it’s hard to stay bad when you see such happy things.”

(This is definitely my favorite description thus far. I was a little nervous when she started out with “fighting” and “bad guys” but it quickly took a turn for the awesome.)

“What are the things next to the heart”
“A seven, and a backwards seven.”
“Why sevens?”
“Because seven is my favorite number. I don’t even know why it’s my favorite but sometimes you just know when you love something and you can’t tell people why. You just love it.”

“There’s a crazy storm of wind and rain but the flower is growing anyway.”

Sunny made this painting for our friends who became a family of three this past winter. We had breakfast with them Sunday morning while they were in town visiting.

“Amy and Ben are the hearts, because they are the mommy and daddy and love baby Jack. Jack is the flower because he is growing like a flower. He’s getting so so big. And the rainbow is to make them happy, like Baby Jack makes them happy.”

Oh how I love preschool metaphors.

A certain little sister insisted on helping Sunny hold today’s painting.

“Black isn’t my favorite color, but it’s important to be nice to things that aren’t even our favorites. So I used the black to make a present and a heart, because those are nice things.”

“This is a super hero with a purple cape. His secret power is lightening that puts out fires. Because there is water in the lightening.”

Sometimes her explanations offer such wisdom veiled in innocence.

Today is not one of those days. But it’s equally awesome.

Sunny created this painting to gift to her GREAT grandparents for their 57th wedding anniversary.

“I know that the pink part of the rainbow is a little crazy, but they’ve loved each other for such a long long time, I bet they’ll love my crazy rainbow, too.”

“Kaki and I are playing under a rainbow. I’m the green one because Courtland always wants to buy the blue milk at the grocery store, so I think that blue is her favorite color.”

Editor’s note: For whatever reason, Courtland insists we purchase the milk with the blue cap at the grocery store. So this statement is indeed true. Just as Sunny insisted that this photograph be taken with both her and Bitty Baby, in matching ensembles.

“Mom, Kaki and I are best friends. And Bitty Baby and I are best friends. It’s okay to have two best friends. Because they both make me the happiest.”

“We have to take the picture in the sun so that everyone can see that this is shimmery paint. Sometimes I just want my life to sparkle, ya know?”

(For a proof of the shimmery paint, a close up here.)

“This is a birthday cake. I know that it doesn’t look like a birthday cake. But sometimes, my head thinks things look different than they’re supposed to. So I make them my way.”
