The Goose Bahoose

gladden_blogalacart-2

Oh how I adore that sweet sweet face. Gladden is proving to be such a loving, endearing addition to the family. She’s as soft and snuggly and wiggly as ever. We’ve been letting her spend more and more time with (supervised) free run of the house. Her favorite spot to rest (after playing and playing and playing and PLAYING with Hanna and her human sisters) is on the Victorian sofa that Ursa so adored. James and I know that we shouldn’t be indulging this furniture lounging behavior, but we feel Ursa tail thumping in approval in our hearts, so Gladdy lounges on.

While I still feel a void in my heart from Ursa’s departure, I’ve felt an expansion thanks to Gladden’s arrival. I’ll never get enough of that slinky wiggle of delight that so characterizes our Gladdy and greets us each morning.

Let it…

snowday

James and I went and played in the snow while the girls’ napped this weekend to shoot my final installment for New Dress a Day (be on the lookout for the post the final Friday of December). While my fingers were frozen solid after this stunt, it was well worth the resulting animated gif.

Gallery Wall

Here is the latest rendition of the gallery wall we have hanging in the girls playroom. It features images from a maternity shoot by the talented Kate Drew Miller, an image of me and James the day after our wedding, a ridiculous portrait of the two of us as monkeys, the “She believed she could so she did” print…

The Other Reindeer

Yesterday after school, Sunny and I headed out on a mother/daughter date. I love that she is now such a little person that we can spend  meaningful time together, talking about our days, what makes us laugh (farts), what makes us scared (loud noises), and what we want for Christmas (a trampoline so we can jump as high as Uncle Ben).

We first visited Santa (pictures forthcoming from the photog staffing the event) at our favorite local children’s boutique, Shima, and then grabbed dinner next door. A meal complete with chicken tenders and fries (duh) but also lox and flat bread (she eats like a grown up now too!).

The highlight of dinner was a visit from a Reindeer dude who has been welcoming visitors to the Santa rendez-vous. As you can see, Sunny dressed for the occasion, and given her antler headband, was more than thrilled at the prospect of snapping a photo with her reindeer friend.

This weekend I’m hosting a baby shower with Kaki’s FGM for our dear friend Laura, and knitting knitting knitting while it snows snows snows. ‘Tis the season! Happy weekend to all!

The Helper

While I’ve spent my free time knitting like a madwoman, James has spent his time tackling projects around the house. We finally have all of our interior walls the grey color we’ve desired since we moved in (nearly 2 years ago). We’ve installed a safe and proper stair gate (we had something previously that was clearly not meant for the top of the stairs). We’ve put down FLOR carpeting in our upstairs hallway (so excited about this. I’ve been dreaming about replicating this look ever since we used FLOR in our upstairs bathroom).

And while all this has been happening, we’ve been having work done (by professionals) on the exterior of our home. We have a new retaining wall made of repurposed rail ties. We have renovated our front porch so that we have wider, safer stairs, railings, new flooring, and lots of new outdoor lighting. After my mom’s emergency this summer, we knew that we needed to do some serious work to make access to our home, no matter the time of day or time of year, safer. I’m feeling really excited and energized by all these changes.

Oh, but the list never ends. We’ve got bedrooms to paint, a downstairs bathroom to renovate, a wood stove to install (we had plans to do that last year but wound up having to fix the foundation of the house first. Which we did do, but talk about the least aesthetically exciting project, ever. James would argue that a sound foundation is probably the most important thing we could do for our home, but whatevs, I’m still yearning for that wood stove!), kitchen cabinets to build, two sides of our house still left to paint the new color… and so on… and so forth… forever. Ah, but man who finish house, die. Or so the saying goes.

One of the many things that I love about James as a father is the way he involves our children in his projects. He’s teaching them self-sufficiency and empowering them to DIY from a young age. As someone who still doesn’t know how to change her own damn tire, I am grateful that I’ll have daughters who are way more capable than I when it comes to home and automobile maintenance.

Just look at Courtland’s joy in helping install the stair gate!

God I love these guys. Do give their latest song a listen. Such a beauty.

Christmas Jumpers

The blog is going to be relatively quiet through Christmas. These days any free time I have is spent huddled in my living room, under piles of yarn, furiously knitting Christmas gifts while scaring the poop out of myself binge-watching Dexter. (Not the most festive of shows for the season, but I am in the zone. And Michael C. Hall? I’ve loved him since Six Feet Under. Swoontown).

And since I can’t post about all my various projects until AFTER Christmas (without ruining surprises), I figured I could post about someone else’s awesome knits. I’ve been a big fan of Wool & The Gang for years now (remember this sweater and this coat?). This year, they knitted up a bunch of sweaters and handed them off to famous British designers to customize this holiday season. All the sweaters are up for auction to benefit the British charity, Save the Children.

How very badly do I want that Alexander McQueen beauty? So very badly.

Oh how I do love smart, progressive advertising. Brava, Pantene. (Admittedly, they could have mixed up the body/beauty types of these men and women… but it’s a step).

Cookie Decorating

This weekend, while Sunny (and James, as parental escort) headed to a fifth birthday party (how the hell is Sunny going to be turning five this coming year?!?), Courtland and I embarked on a Gingerbread Decorating Bonanza at the girls’ preschool. It’s so rare that she and I get one on one time with her as a (temporary) only-child. While she is more temperamental and exhausting to manage than her big sister, I enjoyed our day together, running errands, decorating cookies, and even doing a bit of Christmas shopping—perhaps considering the idea of buying Christmas cookies online—before snuggling up for a nap. It’s important to be reminded that she’s her own person, independent from Sunny. Funny, and sweet, and opinionated. She’s more than just our second born; she’s our Courtland.

The Tree

You’d never know that our Christmas tree was horizontal mere hours before I snapped these photos. Who knew a 3.5 month puppy was so strong?
