Shutter Headboard: Inspiration
by Ashley Weeks Cart
As I type, James is out in the garage sanding and scraping a pile of old shutters. These old shutters came from a friends’ home that is undergoing some serious renovation. We took a few off their hands, inspired to create our own headboard for the new California King mattress that has made a joyous entrance into the Cart Household. You can read about said joy here.
While James performs the manual labor involved in this project, I’ve been scouring The Internet for inspiration. Here are my favorite finds, plus a “Before” photo of the shutters. We’re going shabby chic with the look and will experiment with varying levels for the different pieces of shutter. Most of the headboards below are level, but I like the idea of creating an arched effect.

I absolutely love your stuff. I wish I had that kind of creativity. Where do you find all the shutters? I’ve only ever seen them at antique places but they are so expensive.
We lucked out and got ‘em from a friend’s barn!
I am thinking about making a headboard out of shutters we actually took off of our house. Do you have a photo and/or tutorial of how you did yours? I’m wondering how to make ours a bit taller and how to get then to stay together.
Unfortunately we moved to a house where the shutter headboard wouldn’t work – so we never did the project. Rats! Good luck with yours!!
